Even while war rages in Iraq, I'm selflishly wallowing in some bad times. They're only financial. No lives lost. No health damaged. No relationships severed. (If anything, tying myself tighter to others).
A small backyard sewer repair and oil-tank project ballooned from $7,500 to as much as $25,000. A plan to give away Real World Adobe GoLive 6 as a free PDF might cost me $5,000 to $15,000 in bandwidth charges because of, well, too much interest in the book. Which hasn't sold very well in print. Hence the giveaway.
And today's my birthday. I had a superb meal last night at a restaurant at which we know the regular chef -- she sent off endless amounts of delicious food. Really improved my mood.
Today, I move forward at the beginning of my 35th year. I try to empathetic, expanding my consciousness outward to think about the folks battling not in my name in Iraq, while hoping that the outcome is swift and improves the Iraqi people's lot. And our own.
All together now: it's only money. (And, P.S., my house has a lot of equity in it and interest rates are low. I'll get through it.)

Speaking of repairing things in the world ...
As soon as we own Iraq, America should go after Turkey and Syria. Turkey has not obeyed our commands. We pay them good money to be our puppets and yet they will not do as we command. It is time for regime change in Turkey. As for Syria, I believe these are the real criminals behind Osama Bin Laden. It is time for regime change in Syria. We must do this to protect freedom and democracy. Our humanitarian bombing is necessary to save the world. As soon as we own the world, it will be safe for all who support America.

Yeah, how 'bout putting it out as a BitTorrent stream? I'm sure there are grateful folks who'd be glad to contribute bandwidth- no reason you should shoulder the bill!
The nice thing about this, vs. mirrors, is that it'd take less coordination, and make reader==mirror.

George, it's a PDF, not Web pages, and it's got the full graphics. It's also a 922-page book. Geez.

I sure am glad I didn't download the book. There's a reason why I didn't. Why is it so big? Shouldn't web pages be small and download quickly? Maybe the GoLive philosophy of WYSIWYG page design is not the way to go.

It's disappointing that the sales of the book were so low, but it's seems everyone jumped on the download. Your goodwill backfired. I think that sucks.

Creative Commons would be great, but this is a copyrighted work owned by us and licensed to Peachpit Press. Our deal with Peachpit is quite wonderful. They keep the copyright in our names and we assign most rights to them. But they gave us non-exclusive electronic rights, so we can sell or give away the book, but we can't simply release it under different terms. Still, worth thinking about for future editions.

A couple of suggestions: releasing under a Creative Commons license (including the relatively restrictive non-commercial ones) will open up archive sites for you.
Second, if you want to host it yourself, consider BitTorrent (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/). This is a peer-to-peer network application geared directly to your plight. We're setting up BT trials for the Ghostscript downloads, which we estimate would cost us around $40,000 a year if we were hosting them ourselves.

And/or evaluate your service provider. We get fairly cheap bulk service from superb.net ($135 per 50gb block). Our entire business model is downloadable pdfs, so we researched this relatively thoroughly. Burstable BAD, block-traffic GOOD. Best o' luck. Set up a paypal button for donations, too!

Go for the mirror approach. You could link the "download" button to a small CGI script that redirects the browser to a random download location from your list of mirrors.
If you set this up, I'll be more than happy to mirror your book on my server.

re: the PDF, why not ask for volunteers to mirror it (in fact, some people want *more* traffic)? Also, you could offer it only in a zipped format.

Good luck with your situation.
I'd strongly evaluate the opportunity to generate some revenue while giving away this book. Perhaps there is a consulting market or speaking/training opportunities that you can tap into if the information is in demand as you say. Maybe this is an opportunity instead of a problem. :)
