Five Unemployed Skiers

I'm in Montana (Big Sky) skiing in the beautiful weather and glorious new snow (yeah, cry me a river), with my wife, brother-in-law, and parents-in-law. We were sitting around the table saying something about how great it was to come out mid-week to ski on an off-week, and I said, yeah, well, none of us have jobs!

My wife is starting a business, my brother-in-law is taking the year off to ski and travel, and my mom-and-dad-in-law are retired. Me, I'm self-employed, so it doesn't exactly count as a job.

How does "Gainfully Unemployed" sound?

Posted by: Phil Wolff at January 30, 2003 11:15 AM

Hmmm...?

Why doesn't being self-employed 'really count'?

I've been 'officially' self-employed and on the receiving end of regular 'dole' (am right now) .. and I've never looked at either one as 'more a job' than the other. I work 18-20 hour days regardless of 'whom' I receive my mammon from .. because any job I take I will ultimately be working for ME.

My expectations and criteria (so far in 35 years of work) have been higher and more severe than those for whom I am employeed: client or employer. Therefore, if I meet 'my criteria for excellence in product and service' then I know "they", too will be pleased; have been so far - very few complaints and not been fired yet .KOW! (knock on wood). ?8^>

Been highly unappreciated .. but always welcomed to the 'table of sweat'.

So, for me, at least, in every job I've ever had, I've been 'self-employed' .. and as well, self-motivated. Maybe that's why I have so many irons-in-the-fire; manifesting in operating my own business on-the-side and working an 8-to-5. Lest you get the idea that I'm a 'workaholic' .. let me say with complete candor: YES, I'm guilty as charged - but, with a twist.

I do what I'm passionate about; my work makes a difference; results are felt by humanity and nature. What else would I - or anyone for that matter - want?

Well ... a few more $$ for my efforts; greater affect on what's important; and an extra life or two. Way too much to get done in only one lifetime.
