Call for Mac OS X Freeware Project: Secure Networking

This is an open call to any and all Mac OS X software developers who would like to create an open-source or free (your choice) set of tools to make it a simple operation for a remote user on a laptop or desktop to connect back over SSH, SSL, or your choice of secure protocol through a simple one-interface login and create encryption mail, FTP, Web, and other services.

Right now, if you operate a mail server that supports inbound SSH connections, you can run a simple script under OS X to use SSH to port forward. But a user interface coupled with a small piece of server software to handle redirects would go a long way towards making Mac OS X users the encryption kings.

I have no application programming experience, but I can define and shape the problem.

Any interest?

Ok, I'll bite. I need a similar tool, so getting user requirements will be nice. Send me and email, and we can talk about it.

Can you further describe "a small piece of server software to handle redirects"?

I haven't seen it since the early versions (my SSH tunnels rely on some simple scripts), but Vapor may do what you want:

If not, I'd be interested to hear how it falls short.

Actually, I've already been using an open source program for OS X called SSH Agent. It works just like sshagent on various other platforms (but with an Aqua interface), and it also has a GUI for creating SSH tunnels. It can also create "bookmarks" for common tunnels, making it very easy to access frequently used servers.

For example, I have some tunnels saved to check email on various servers I manage. So, when I'm on an unsecure network (say, a coffee shop's WiFi hotspot), I just have to click on a tunnel's "bookmark," launch mail, and I'm set! I'd suggest checking out SSH Agent - it may do everything you're looking for.

I'm not a programmer either, but this looks like something someone could do with a combination of shell scripts and AppleScript Studio.

I'm willing to help with testing, and documentation, two things I do know how to do.
