Turning technology from mumbo-jumbo into rich tasty gumbo
Take Control of Your Domain Names | Main | Less Laptop Enthusiasm in Schools Lynn and I needed to fill a prescription for Ben on Sunday night at 7 pm, and some pharmacies close early on Sundays or weekends. We did quickly find that Bartell's in University Village is open until 9 pm, but none of the staff at the nearby QFC (at the service booth) or either of the on-duty pharmacists at Bartell's could easily tell us where we would find a 24-hour pharmacy in Seattle. They suggested, but didn't know.
I had thought it was a law or practice that every pharmacy, when closed, had the name, address, and phone number of the nearest 24-hour pharmacy. It seems logical to do so, because if you can't fill the prescription, it likely means someone really needs it. It shouldn't be a competitive issue. But apparently that's not the case.
Herewith, I'm listing the 24-hour pharmacies I've found in Seattle, and I hope if others find this post, they will add additional information in the comments.
Bartell Drugs, Queen Anne: 600 First Ave. N. (map), pharmacy 206-284-1354. This is the only 24-hour Bartell in Seattle of any kind.
Walgreens, Ballard: 5409 15th Ave. NW (map), pharmacy 206-781-0056.
Uh...that's it. Help?

My wife was having what we thought was some kind of reaction to medicine taken for a staph infection. Of course, this also happened late at night. We were not able to consult medical personell as we live in remote Alaska. Thanks to your site, we were able to get the answers we needed and continue the medication inspite of the intense pain. As you can tell, you have helped a lot of people from different parts of the world. Thank you for sharing.
[Editor's note: Gosh, I never thought about this being a resource for people trying to find a pharmacist *somewhere* in the middle of the night. Glad to have helped.-gf]

Thanks for the information. We took our daughter to Childrens Hospital but they could not fill the Prescription at their Pharmacy. It was 2200 hrs. and all the Pharmacies we were aware of closed at 2100 hrs. The funny thing is, the Pharmacist was not sure there were any 24 hr. Pharmacies still in operation.....Thanks to you, we now know of two.

Thanks for this info. I'm in Japan, with a medical system that deals with pain management very differently than in the U.S.. I needed some advice about med combos at what was the middle of the night there, and through your site, got the number and right through to a pharmacist who could help me and answer all my questions. Thanks so much,
JD
[Glenn responds: What an unintentional purpose, but I'm glad it helped.]

thanks -- a friend just forwarded me your link -- i was driving around seattle getting no help from the 'not 24 hour pharmacies'! finally found a Rite Aid that opened at 6am (center of seattle)
really surprised that at least 1 doesn't exist downtown...

When my wife and I were in that situation (pre-Google), we tapped the human search network. We called three or four different pediatricians' offices in nearby suburbs and wound up with a list of 4 or 5 pharmacies. Hint - compile the list before you need it, then call the pharmacy before you leave the house. Several were no longer 24-hour, but one chain had a list of all the 24-hour branches within 20 miles. Second hint - call the large practices rather than the solo practicioners. They have more staff, and are more likely to have compiled resources like this. FWIW, CVS, Walgreens, and Kroger's (grocery chain) all have 24-hour sites in this area.

The problem is that 24 hour pharmacy service is rarely a permanent feature. Most find out quickly that when you add up the costs (added security, extra pay to get a pharmacist to work graveyard shift, etc.) that it is a money sink and close.
There should be a site that tracks the opening and shuttering of such businesses, likewise all 24 hour businesses/services. Probably a commercial opportunity in it, too. "Up All Night, a website for all things at all hours."
[Glenn writes: That's a fantastic idea. If built correctly, it would have a back-end that let people easily submit information, which could be confirmed by a phone call.
[As far as pharmacies, though, I thought that there was a commitment by state pharmacy boards to require (or perhaps enable) at least one 24-hour pharmacy in any community within a reasonable drive.]
